Year-long mentorship program for women with disabilities | India News

A Mumbai based non-profit has launched a year-long mentorship program for women with disabilities. “I Can Lead” initiated by NGO Rising Flame is a leadership program for self-development and professional growth.
A group of six women with disabilities, selected from across the country, will be given intensive individual training to address their specific ambitions, needs and skills. “The aim is to train them in a combination of theoretical learning and practical approaches to enable them to address key problems and barriers in their environment and on the path to their dreams,” a statement from the NGO said.
The fellows include students, corporate employees and development professionals. Their mentors include Rising Flame founder Nidhi Goyal, Stuti Kacker former Chairperson of National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights, Meenu Bhambhani CSR head of Mphasis, Amba Salelkar- lawyer from Equals CPSJ, Smitha Sadasivan- disability rights activist and Deepa Palaniappan- disability consultant and policy researcher.
Since its inception in 2017, Rising Flame works towards people with disabilities having a voice, having a space, being heard and leading from the front. Speaking about the campaign Goyal said, “Women and girls with disabilities face a severe invisibility. We not only navigate the complexities of being a woman in a gendered society, we are often overprotected or entirely neglected within our families and communities. Our prospects are even more narrowed by social stigma, protectionism and inaccessible public spaces.”
She added that the women had little opportunity to grow due to lack of support from families and society at large.
