Eight others, including staff and customers, have been reported injured.
In a shocking accident at a Brazil supermarket, one worker was crushed to death after towering shelves of products collapsed on top of each other in a domino effect.
While eight people, including staff and customers, were injured in the incident that happened late Friday at the Mateus Atacarejo Mix Supermarket in São Luís, north Brazil.
CCTV captured the moment the metal shelves to the right of the screen started to fall causing a domino effect on other huge shelves in front, stacked high with goods. The footage shows customers and staff baffled at the thunderous noise before they flee seeing the shelves coming crashing down.
The deceased worker was identified as Elane de Oliveira Rodrigues, 21, who had been working at the supermarket for three months. She had been stacking shelves when the accident took place.
Ruan Alysson, the victim’s cousin said to the local press, ‘(Elane) was so happy with her new job because she had just started working as a shelf stacker for the company three months ago. The last picture she took of herself on her phone, in her blue work t-shirt, was on the shop floor.”
Over 270 firefighters were engaged in the rescue operation that lasted over 11 hours as several people were buried under the shelves, reported Daily Mail. It is not known yet what caused the collapse, but an accident involving a forklift truck causing the shelves to collapse is suspected to be the reason behind the tragedy.
