They were was transported in 50 trucks.

It was not a regular morning for the fishermen at the Shaam area, some 40km to the north of Ras Al Khaimah city.

When they dragged their fishing nets ashore on Saturday, they found an unprecedented large amount of fish.

The haul was so huge that 50 vehicles had to be brought to transport the fish, the largest haul ever in four years, to the fish markets.

A video went viral on social media after three local fishermen and Asian workers spotted the catch and shot a video of the same, uploading it on social media.

Abdullah Mohammed, one of the three Emirati fishermen, said the unprecedented catch weighed around 50 tonnes.

“These reached the Shaam coasts around 3.30pm.”

The big catch can be attributed to the Dhaqhwa fishing technique, he explained.

“Special fishing nets are used in this type of fishing.”

Up to 20 tonnes of fish were caught last year, he added.

Humaid Al Zaabi, Deputy Chairman of the RAK Fishermen Society, said that most of the fish caught this time is the diyayoh fish.

“This is a migrant fish and is usually sold at a cheap price.”

Muhammad Sulaiman, an Asian fisherman here, said he was shocked with the big amount of fish caught.

“This is ‘Rizq’ (gift) from Almighty Allah, and hopefully this will help compensate our recent loss due to the unstable and hot weather.”
