The service enhances the speed of frontline doctors’ response when they are called up for emergencies.

A new service that will see police patrols escort doctors to hospitals in cases of emergencies has been rolled out in the UAE. Lt.-General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, launched the ‘Bin Wraiqa’ service on Tuesday.

The service enhances the speed of frontline doctors’ response when they are called up for emergencies. A first batch of doctors has completed a qualification course on the new service.

A video tweeted by Sheikh Saif shows how the service works. The video shows a doctor having a quiet dinner with her family when she gets a call from a hospital about an emergency. She sends out an alert to the ministry’s control room using her phone, after which police patrols are dispatched to escort her vehicle to the hospital without getting stuck in traffic. She switches on a green siren in her car and follows the cops to reach the hospital in time to save the patient’s life.

The service was first proposed by a doctor.

Brigadier Nasser Khadim Al Kaabi, Director-General of Happiness at the Minister of Interior, said the service was named after Said bin Wraiqa Al Ameri, an escort of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan (Zayed the First – the grandfather of the late founder of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan). Bin Wraiqa was a famous traditional doctor treating his fellow countrymen and saving their lives.
