Swimmer saves elderly driver’s life after he crashes car into gym’s pool – News

The 69-year-old driver accidentally stepped on the gas pedal instead of the emergency brake.

A 69-year-old Seattle motorist crashed his car through a window at an LA Fitness gym, plunging it straight into a swimming pool when he accidentally pressed on the gas pedal while parking.

According to reports in Daily Mail, there were three people when the elderly driver smashed through the glass window on Monday morning.

He was still strapped in the seat of his Toyota sedan that laid submerged in the water when a quick-thinking physical therapy aide and avid swimmer, Noah Schlenke, rushed to rescue the shocked driver. Also a lifeguard, Schlenke was one of two rescuers who freed the elderly driver and was swimming in the pool at the time.

“My first instinct was like, ‘Oh my God, there was someone in that lane’, and to make sure that person is not under the car,” Schlenke told Komo News. According to details, the driver was parking his car in a nearby handicap space outside the gym when he stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brakes, causing him to accelerate out of control.

Schlenke and one other swimmer went under the water to free the driver.

“We opened the door and we’re like, ‘Hey you gotta get out, you gotta get out!’. And he just kind of looked at us and he still wasn’t quite understanding where he was. So, the guy I was with actually just came in and reached over and grabbed him and pulled him out,” Schlenke said. The vehicle was towed out of the pool and no one was reported injured in the accident.
