This year’s Gender Balance Index named winners in four categories.

The UAE Gender Balance Council on Monday announced this year’s top personalities, firms and initiatives that champion gender equality across the nation.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, congratulated the winners of the Gender Balance Index’s third edition and commended Emirati women’s valuable contributions to the sustainable development of the country over the past 50 years.

This year’s Gender Balance Index named winners in four categories: Best Personality Supporting Gender Balance, Best Federal Organisation Supporting Gender Balance, Best Initiative Supporting Gender Balance, and a new category, Best Banking and Financial Sector Institution Supporting Gender Balance.

Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, president of the UAE Gender Balance Council, said: “Since the establishment of the UAE, women have been supported through pioneering legislations and initiatives that promote gender balance.”

Gender balance has always been a national priority, Sheikha Manal said, and in a short span of time, the UAE has managed to clinch the top ranks in global gender equality reports.

“These achievements have been made possible by the vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the unwavering support extended by Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation,” Sheikha Manal added.

The winners of the third Gender Balance Index are:

>Best Personality Supporting Gender Balance: Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs

Sheikh Mansour won the category for his tireless efforts in providing women with a positive and supportive work environment in the Ministry of Presidential Affairs.

>Best Federal Organisation Supporting Gender Balance: Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and Federal Demographic Council

Evaluation in this category is based on national indicators in three focus areas: decision-making, education and experience, and work environment.

>Best Initiative Supporting Gender Balance: Ministry of Health and Prevention (Mohap) for its cervical cancer vaccination drive

Mohap won the award for its decision to include cervical cancer vaccinations (HPV) within the National Immunisation Programme. The vaccine is administered in two doses to schoolgirls aged 13 and 14 who are in the eighth grade.

Cervical cancer is identified as a cause of death for a quarter of a million women around the world and half a million women suffer from the illness annually. Mohap’s pioneering initiative will contribute to reducing mortality from this disease.

>Best Banking and Financial Sector Institution Supporting Gender Balance: Standard Chartered Bank

Out of the 12 financial institutions nominated for this new award, Standard Chartered Bank was named the winner after ranking first in five evaluation criteria: Supporting global sustainability indicators in the field of gender balance; realising the institution’s vision by fostering an overall culture of gender balance; employing gender balance to empower human resources; ensuring balance when providing services to customers; and the governance of gender balance enablers.

The CEO of Standard Chartered Bank in the UAE, Rola Abu Minneh, is an Emirati banker with over 25 years of experience in banking and finance, and the first Emirati woman to head a bank in the UAE.

Over the course of her professional career, Rola has championed female entrepreneurship and empowerment. During her first year with the bank, she was already included in Arabian Business’ ‘World’s Most Powerful Arabs in 2019’ list, as well as Forbes Maga-zine’s 2020 list of ‘Middle East’s 100 Power Businesswomen’.
