For the UAE, this year’s Eid Al Adha was different – because as the country celebrated, a part of it is in space, cruising its way towards the Red Planet. The nation’s leaders on Friday marked Eid with a grand reception for the Emirates Mars Mission team at Qasr al Watan Palace in Abu Dhabi.

The reception was hosted by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, along with His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. Other top officials of the country were also present.

Taking to Twitter, Sheikh Mohammed said: “The citizens of the nation are the greatest achievements of the UAE. With them, it rises high and on them we hold our expectations and on their achievements we place our pride in front of the world.”

In the photos shared on the platform, the leaders could be seen interacting with the group of young Emirati engineers and experts who made the Hope probe mission happen.

The UAE launched the Arab world’s first interplanetary mission on July 20 from Japan’s Tanegashima Space Centre. Launched at 1.58am, the Hope probe is currently cruising at 121,000km/h towards Mars and is expected to get into its orbit around the Red Planet in February 2021.

In a tweet, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi said he was ‘delighted to honour the Hope Probe team,’ along with his “brother Mohammed bin Rashid.”

“They (Hope Probe team) are role models for our youth and an asset of scientific excellence. On our 50th anniversary, the probe will reach its destination, proving once more that our determination achieves our ambitions,” he added.
