Nagas can ‘co-exist’, not ‘merge’ with India: NSCN-IM | India News

GUWAHATI: Weeks after PM Modi asked Nagaland governor and interlocutor R N Ravi to wrap up the Naga peace talks by November, the NSCN (I-M) on Wednesday demanded to be treated as the sole arbiter in the process and iterated that “merger of Nagas with the Union of India” could never be the objective.
In a statement sent to TOI, the largest Naga rebel outfit said, “The Nagas will not merge into the Union of India, but they will co-exist with the Union of India as two entities. Nagas are a recognised entity. Nagas do not accept (the) Indian Constitution, but Nagas and Indians will share sovereign powers based on competencies.” The outfit threw in a note of conciliation, saying “the Nagas and the Indians are inseparably inter-related in many fields”.
The NSCN (I-M), with whom the Centre has been in negotiations since 1997, have had differences with Ravi over the involvement of seven other Naga rebel groups in the peace process.
