MP EOW refers to Chidambaram’s case to challenge Kuthiyala’s bail | India News

BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh EOW has referred to rejection of the anticipatory bail to former Union minister P Chidambaram in a case of money laundering, in its reply to be submitted before the Supreme court to challenge bail plea of B K Kuthiyala — former vice-chancellor of Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Mass Communication.
“We are informing the court that Kuthiyala is not cooperating with our investigations. Also we are citing reference of SLP 1340/2019 in which SC had rejected Chidambaram’s bail plea in a case of economic offences. Kuthiyla’s case is no different i.e. his bail should also be rejected and we should be allowed to arrest him,” said K N Tiwari, DG EOW. EOW will submit its reply before SC on Thursday.
Meanwhile Kuthiyala was questioned for more than five hours by the EOW officials on Wednesday. This was his second visit. After repeated summons for months, B K Kuthiyala had appeared before EOW for the first time on Friday to record his statement in the probe into alleged irregularities at the institute during his tenure.
Kuthiyala turned up at EOW after dodging summons for nearly four months on various grounds, said sources.
In April, EOW had registered an FIR against him and 19 others, including some heads of departments of Makhanlal University, for alleged irregularities in appointments and financial matters. A case was registered on the basis of a three-member committee’s report, which audited recruitment and other administrative affairs during Kuthiyala’s tenure from 2010 to 2018.
The FIR says that the former V-C opened several study centres outside campus to “benefit a group of people” and that he “used his office to bear his and his family’s expenses”. Appointments made between 2010 and 2018 were not according to the UGC guidelines and several “unqualified recruitment” took place, says the FIR. Kuthiyala has denied all the charges.
