A man has been charged at the Dubai Court of First Instance after he allegedly secretly filmed three women and others in their flat with his mobile phone.

The court heard how the 27-year-old man, a Filipino waiter, hid his phone on camera mode around the flat, including in the bathroom, to take inappropriate snaps of the unaware women.

He is accused of violating women’s modesty and using his phone to invade others’ privacy.

The case dates back to August 26. It was registered at Al Muraqqabat police station. The defendant remains in detention while the public prosecution requested a strict penalty against him.

A Filipina employee in a restaurant said that she stayed in a flat – together with other women and men – including two other complainants. “There are seven rooms in the flat and each room is shared and partitioned. “On August 26,

I woke up around 5am. I was getting dressed to go to work when I spotted a mobile phone down the floor. I picked it up and to my surprise its camera was on. The accused then showed up and tried to snatch it from my hand.”

She called the police after finding video clips in the phone gallery showing some of her flatmates in the shower. “I changed my clothes while the door was partially opened. I thought that everyone was still asleep at that early hour.”

She told the investigator that the defendant filmed her while she had just a towel on and while she changed her clothes. The woman said that she could not find that video as the accused immediately deleted it when he snatched the phone from her.

A Filipina waitress said that she found out about the secret recordings around 6.30am on that day when she heard her flatmate screaming.

Another woman said she had stayed in that flat for about three months.

Five video sequences showing women in shower were found in the defendant’s seized phone.

The trial has been adjourned to October 8.
