Nahoum, who is also the co-founder of the UAE-Israel Business Council, is on a week-long official visit to Dubai starting October 8.
Peace between the UAE and Israel will lead to prosperity and transform the region into a superpower, and bring more job opportunities for Palestinians in East Jerusalem, Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem, Fleur Hassan Nahoum, told Khaleej Times in an exclusive interview.
Nahoum, who is also the co-founder of the UAE-Israel Business Council, is on a week-long official visit to Dubai starting October 8. She will be discussing the creation of business opportunities for Israelis and the UAE.
“I believe that the future of UAE-Israel business looks bright. This is the beginning of a new regional order based on what unites us rather than what divides us. The meeting of modern advanced economies in the Middle East will foster a new era of prosperity, reconciliation and peace for the region and the world.
We have the opportunity to build the most dynamic and robust region in the world,” she told Khaleej Times ahead of her visit.
While building partnerships, Nahoum said it is important to involve East Jerusalem Arabs in the Israel-Gulf normalisation process because they will benefit tremendously from this in many ways.
“East Jerusalem can be a natural bridge between Israel and the Gulf because of a common language and culture,” said the visiting Deputy Mayor of a city with a population that is 40 per cent Arab
“I envision East Jerusalem being the ‘back office’ to the Middle East as we have the most diverse population which makes us a very organic platform for the relationship,” she added.
The UAE became the first Gulf country to normalise relations with Israel, and the Emirates along with Bahrain signed the historic Abraham Accord at the White House on September 16.
Nahoum said it is “extremely exciting as an Israeli to be part of creating a warm peace with an Arab neighbor.
“We have always craved for peace and it’s incredibly gratifying to see that the desire for peace is mutual. I believe we can look forward to exciting business relations that will bring enormous prosperity to both Israelis and Emiratis, and turn our region into a superpower.”
Speaking about the benefits of the new-found peace, Nahoum said there is “enormous potential for both business communities.”
“We have complementary strengths. We are looking for strategic partners and the UAE is the gateway and logistical centre to the markets of East and much of Africa.”
According to her, tourism will receive a big boost as Muslim tourists from the Gulf will want to pray at Holy sites for the first time and Israelis are excited to visit the UAE.
“There is also tremendous interest in the agriculture and water filtration sectors. Sharing similar typography and weather, the UAE will find applications, products or methods that can be imported from Israel,” she said.
