IPL 2020: Young Garg’s maiden 50 takes Sunrisers Hyderabad to 164 – News

Youngster Priyam Garg scored his maiden half-century to breathe life into Sunrisers Hyderabad’s total against the Chennai Super Kings in Match 14 of the IPL at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Friday night.

The 19-year-old Garg, who captained India to a runners-up finish at the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year, clubbed an unbeaten 51 from 26 deliveries with six boundaries and a six as the Sunrisers rallied to 164 for five after they were left tottering at 69 for four in 11 overs.

Sunrisers Hyderabad captain David Warner won the toss and opted to take first strike, given the frailties of the Chennai Super Kings while chasing over the past two games.

But the decision, at least initially, seemed to have backfired as they not just went at a snail’s pace but also lost a heap of wickets.

Deepak Chahar bowled an immaculate line and length on off stump, first up, and hitting the seam beautifully. And opener Jonny Bairstow was sucked into it as it ricocheted off his pad and onto the stumps, off the fourth ball of the match.

New man Manish Pandey too was foxed but the Karnataka batsman got away with it as his cover drive edged past to the third man boundary.

Pandey lofted Sam Curran to the mid-off boundary in the next over and then picked another four, a straight drive off Chahar.

Pandey was coming into his own as he came up with another straight drive for a boundary, this time off Curran.

He then pulled Chahar for a four as the Sunrisers Hyderabad reached 33 for one in the first five overs. Pandey was on a 16-ball 25, while Warner was overly cautious with a slow six from 11 deliveries.

Warner got his first boundary with a neat punch straight past Shardul Thakur, one of the three changes Chennai Super Kings made to their playing XI.

Opener Murali Vijay, Ruturaj Gaikwad, a prolific run-getter on India’s domestic circuit and Josh Hazelwood were the ones to sit out as Ambati Rayudu and Dwayne Bravo were passed fit following injuries and returned to fold.

Mandey, who had required 69 runs to become the 12th Indian batsman to reach 3000 runs in the IPL, fell short of that milestone as he hit Thakur straight down Curran throat at mid-off. His 21-ball 29 contained five boundaries and his second wicket stand with Warner was worth 46 runs.

Warner and Kane Williamson then added 22 runs for the third wicket before falling in quick succession. Warner’s painstaking knock of 28 came from 29 balls and had three boundaries, while Williamson was unfortunately run out while trying to steal a single off leg spinner Piyush Chawla.

Williamson set off for probably what was a non-existent single as Priyam Garg stayed put at the crease. And Rayudu swooped on it at midwicket and threw it back to skipper and wicketkeeper MS Dhoni, even as Williamson made a U-turn and tried to scramble back to the crease.

The normally cool and composed Williamson gave a cold stare to Garg before walking back to the dugout.

Garg made up for a mistake which was probably not his by stroking his way to his first half-century from 23 deliveries that was studded with six boundaries and a six.

He and Abhishek Sharma (31, 24b, 4×4, 1×6) put on a valuable 77 runs for the fifth wicket to swell Sunrisers Hyderabad to a total that had looked bleak earlier.

Brief scores:

Sunrisers Hyderabad: 164-5 in 20 overs (Priyam Garg 51 not out, Abhishek Sharma 31, Manish Pandey 29, David Warner 28, Deepak Chahar 2-31) vs Chennai Super Kings.

Teams:

Sunrisers Hyderabad: David Warner (C), Jonny Bairstow (wk), Manish Pandey, Kane Williamson, Abdul Samad, Abhishek Sharma, Priyam Garg, Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, T Natarajan, Khaleel Ahmed.

Chennai Super Kings: Shane Watson, Faf du Plessis, Ambati Rayudu, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni (C) (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran, Dwayne Bravo, Deepak Chahar, Piyush Chawla, Shardul Thakur.
