India vs South Africa: Virat Kohli hits 7th double century, goes past Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: When Virat Kohli is on song, he is unstoppable. The Indian run-machine has a number of records to his name already and on Friday the Indian captain added another feather to his already illustrious cap when he scored a double century against South Africa, the seventh of his Test career, on Day 2 of the second Test at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

With this double century, Kohli went past Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar who scored six Test double centuries each.

Kohli took two runs off South African left arm spinner Senuran Muthusamy to reach the 200-run mark off 295 balls.

The 30-year-old Kohli also became the first Indian captain to hit a double century against South Africa.

He also become the third Indian to score a double ton against South Africa. The other two Indians who have done that are Virender Sehwag (319 in Chennai in 2008) and Mayank Agarwal (215 in Vizag in 2019)

Kohli, who notched up his 26th Test century earlier in the day, batted brilliantly to convert his ton into a double ton.

Kohli, who took over the Test captaincy from MS Dhoni in 2014, also became the first Indian to score 40 international centuries as skipper.

Kohli now has 19 Test centuries and 21 ODI centuries under his belt as captain.

Australia legend Ricky Ponting has the most international hundreds – 41 – as captain. Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith is third with 33 tons, while former Australia captain Steve Smith is fourth in the tally with 20 international centuries as captain.

In the process, Kohli also went past Pakistan legend Inzamam-ul-Haq. Kohli hit South Africa pacer Vernon Philander for a boundary to get to his 26th Test century and surpassed Inzamam’s 25-century mark in style.

Inzamam scored 25 centuries in 120 Tests (200 innings), while Kohli brought up his 26th Test ton in his 81st Test (138th innings).

With 26 Test tons, Kohli has now joined the likes of West Indies legend Gary Sobers and Australia’s Steve Smith on the list of most Test centuries.

Sachin Tendulkar is sitting on top of the elite list with 51 centuries to his name. Tendulkar played 200 Tests (329 innings) and scored 15921 runs at an average of 53.78.

There are three Indian batsmen in the top 10 of the most Test centuries list.

Rahul Dravid (36 centuries) and Sunil Gavaskar (34 centuries) are the other two Indian batsmen on that list.
