The right-hander, who celebrated his 20th birthday four days ago, was part of the India A side, which won the five-match unofficial ODI series 4-1 against the touring South Africa A team earlier this month.
The 2018 under-19 World Cup star made his international debut earlier this year, playing two ODIs against New Zealand down under. But his initial foray into the big league was not very successful. He scored just 16 runs in two innings.
Gill though has an enviable first-class record so far in his nascent career, scoring 1443 runs at an average of 72.15 with the help of four centuries and eight fifties in 14 matches. He scored 90 in the recently concluded first unofficial Test against South Africa A, which India won by seven wickets.
Gill’s first-class record:
Gill also made the headlines during India A’s tour to the Carribean in August this year, where he scored an unbeaten 204 against West Indies A.
Given these consistent performances, a Test call up at the age of 20 for Shubman Gill should not raise any eyebrows at all.
