How an ‘evil witch’ made Angelina Jolie emotional

A dark fantasy film is probably the least genre from which you expect to derive profound family lessons, but that’s what happened for A-list actress Angelina Jolie.

The film Maleficent: Mistress of Evil actually made its lead star reflect on her role as a mother to six kids.

Picking up from where the first film left off, Maleficent (Angelina) finds her peaceful routine as protector of the Moors shaken after Prince Phillip (Harris Dickinson) proposes to Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning).

Unknown to all, Phillip’s mother, Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer), looks to use the wedding to divide humans and fairies forever.

Maleficent and Aurora find themselves on opposing sides of an imminent war, making them question whether they can truly live as a family.

Trivia: Maleficent is the retelling of Sleeping Beauty but this time around, it’s from the villain’s perspective.

Angelina was able to relate to her character’s desire to be a good mother at all costs.

This idea of a ‘perfect mum,’ however, can only lead to unrealistic expectations and unnecessary pressure.

“I questioned when I was a mother if I was good enough. We probably all have this idea – I know I did before I had kids – that to be a perfect mother, you have to be a perfect person and that’s just not true,” she reflected during the film’s London premiere.

The 44-year-old actress was actually still reeling from the emotional effect of seeing her son Maddox leave the family nest to enter college in South Korea.

“You have to do your best and be willing to put your child before you,” she adds.

Embracing one’s individuality is also one of the film’s central messages, according to the actress.

“We all have something inside of us that maybe we feel is misunderstood or if we let it out completely and be completely who we are it might not be accepted,” she said.

“But then I think what are we doing on this earth if we can’t figure out what that is that makes us uniquely us, to be it and then to find those who accept us for it.”

She added: “I hope everybody pushes back; there’s so much judgment these days. Be more and more yourself and shut it down.”

Also starring: Sam Riley, Ed Skrein, Imelda Staunton and Juno Temple
Rating: 18TC

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is showing across the UAE on 17th October.
