Gucci trolled for selling Dh2,900 Indy turbans

In February Gucci stopped the sale of a wool balaclava sweater because of ‘blackface’ controversy.

Italian fashion brand Gucci is facing controversy once again after it sold its new traditional Sikh turbans on Nordstrom’s website for $800 (Dh2,900 approx).

Last year at Milan Fashion Week, a male model walked the runway with a headgear resembling Sikh turbans and quickly triggered an outrage. Again this year, Gucci started the online sale of turbans, calling them ‘Indy Full Turban’, on Nordstrom’s website, reported India Today.

The Gucci product appears on the online store with a description: ‘A gorgeously crafted turban is ready to turn heads while keeping you in comfort as well as trademark style’. Further, the product will be delivered for free and comes in only one size.

A Twitter user, Harjinder Singh Kukreja wrote: ‘Dear Gucci, the Sikh Turban is not a hot new accessory for white models but an article of faith for practicing Sikhs. Your models have used Turbans as hats’ whereas practicing Sikhs tie them neatly fold-by-fold. Using fake Sikhs/Turbans is worse than selling fake Gucci products’. Several angry tweets have since followed with many calling Gucci move as insensitive.

According to reports in cbsnews.com, in February Gucci stopped the sale of a wool balaclava sweater from its collection and apologized to the public after people said the design reminded them of ‘blackface’. The $890 item featured an oversized neck with a cutout for the mouth outlined in red, imitating a pair of lips.
