Grandmother sentenced to 3 years in prison for torturing granddaughter


CAIRO – 12 October 2019: A 40-year-old grandmother was sentenced to three years in prison with enforced hard labor on Saturday for torturing one for granddaughters, stated a Sherbin misdemeanor court, in Dakahlia governorate (Delta).

According to the forensic report, burn marks were found on the 6-year-old granddaughter’s body. The girl testified at the trial that her grandmother, Safaa Abdel-Latif, tortured her and tortured her younger sister , Ganna, to death. Abdel-Latif is still stand trial for torturing Janna to death.

Gannah, 4, died Saturday after succumbing to the wounds she had sustained over a long time of torture and amputating her leg. Amany, 6, was found to have similar wounds to her younger sister, such as burns in the genital area.

Amany has been transferred to an orphanage in Giza, which lies under the auspices of Al-Azhar Imam Ahmed al-Tayeb. After rehabilitation, she will return to her father’s family.

In a statement on September 29, 2019, the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood (NCCM) grievously mourned “Ganna”, calling for he harshest penalty for the perpetrators as the heinous crime is considered to be a premeditated murder which is punished by execution according to the articles 230 and 231 of the Egyptian penal code.
