Foundation stone of Baba Guru Nanak University laid at Nankana Sahib in Pakistan | India News

AMRITSAR: Finally, there is hope of setting up of a university dedicated to Guru Nank Dev at his birth place after Pakistan Punjab’s chief minister Sardar Usman Buzdor laid the foundation stone of Baba Guru Nanak University (BGNU) at Nankana Sahib on Friday.
While talking to TOI over phone from Nankana Sahib, Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party’s Sikh lawmaker Mahinderpal Singh informed that Buzdor laid the foundation stone of the Rs 6 billion BGNU, which would be spread over 10 acres.
Mohinderpal had accompanied Buzdor on his visit to Nankana Sahib for laying the foundation stone and other repair work to spruce up the city ahead of the beginning of International Nagar Kirtan by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee on July 25.
“Establishment of BGNU in Nankana Sahib, the birth place of Guru Nanak is part of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s vision,” said the MPA, quoting Buzdor.
Notably, there has been much controversy over setting up of BGNU due to vested interests of many, including former officials of Evacuee Trust Property Board . In past, it was decided to shift the university out of Nankana Sahib.
Earlier, the BGNU was proposed to be set up in over 200 acres.
To promote religious tourism, which is also Khan’s vision after he came to power, Mohinderpal informed Pakistan Punjab’s chief minister also inaugurated a tourism development corporation of Punjab’s motel which has been constructed at the cost of Rs 13 crore.
“A lot of accommodation will be required for the devotees during celebration functions” he said.
“Chief minister also planted saplings dedicated to the 550 birth anniversary of Baba Nanak at Nankana Sahib and assured to provide best possible facilities to the pilgrims visiting Nankana Sahib to celebrate the birth anniversary of Guru” he said.
He further informed that keeping in view the possible rush of pilgrims at Nankana Sahib form across the world, Buzdor also inaugurated the repair and maintenance work of roads linking various Gurdwara’s in Nankana Sahib.
