Five places to get your fill of sushi

Whether you’re mad for maki or have a weakness for wasabi, these five spots will cure your sushi craving faster than the chop of a sushi master’s knife. Ready? Let’s roll…

Sushi Art

If you’re looking to dine at home and need a speedy sushi solution, pick up the phone – or open your favourite food delivery app – and order from Sushi Art, which boasts a monstrous menu of just about anything you could want. Be sure to try the California citrus salmon roll (AED 35 for six pieces) as it serves up the perfect combination of textures and flavours. There is also a great selection of boxes if you’re looking to feed the masses, with options starting from AED 195. The Galleria, Al Maryah Island. Daily 11am-11pm. Contact: 800 220, sushiart.ae

Sho Cho

This restaurant isn’t just the creator of delicious Japanese cuisine, it’s a trendy setting that oozes cool. Thanks to the modern finishings with flickers of oriental styling, you and your fellow diners won’t feel like you’re in Abu Dhabi at all (apart from the spectacular view of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, of course). The knowledgeable staff are on hand with recommendations, but if you try one thing, make sure it’s the yellowtail jalapeño: wafer-thin slices of the fish are delicately dressed in yuzu sauce, fresh coriander and a shaving of jalapeño for a great balance of flavours. Souk Qaryat al Beri, between the bridges. Sun-Thu noon-3.30pm and 6pm-11.45pm, Fri-Sat noon-11.45pm. Contact: 02 558 117, sho-cho.com/abudhabi

Sushi Central

With several branches across Abu Dhabi and offering pocket-friendly prices, there’s a reason Sushi Central has grown in popularity over the last few years. Signature dishes include crab and cucumber salad (AED 34.50) and the spicy salmon poke bowl (AED 52) but we love the spicy crab, six-piece dish. Brimming with crab stick, cucumber, spicy mayo and topped with black sesame seeds, it’s a must-try. Various locations. Daily 11am 11.45pm. Contact: 600 520 007, sushicentral.ae

Sushi Counter

Sushi is a healthy meal, but sometimes some small changes can make it even healthier – and Sushi Counter does just that, offering the chance to swap white rice for brown or wild. But what we really like about Sushi Counter is its selection of traditional and modern rolls. Ranging from the classic spicy tuna (AED 29.40 for six pieces) to one of our favourites, the mango chutney roll (AED 18.90), this place has you covered. It even has an impressive selection of street food, like tuna sushi burritos and more. NYU Abu Dhabi, Saadiyat Island. Sun-Thu 10am-10pm, Fri-Sat noon-10pm. Contact: 800 268 6837, sushicounter.com

Since arriving in 2005 and spreading to include three restaurants, Samurai is certainly part of Abu Dhabi’s Japanese scene. The menu is pretty vast, with over 30 maki options, 16 sushi dishes and more. So where do you start? Purists will enjoy the more simple rolls like salmon and avocado or the California maki. If you’re feeling more adventurous, try the kani fusion roll stuffed with grilled eel and avocado and topped with crab sticks and flying fish roe. Various locations including Al Nuaimi Tower, behind Al Diar Capital Hotel, Mina Street, Al Zahiyah. Daily 11am-12.30am. Contact: 02 676 6612, samurai.ae
