The UAE has conducted over 8.5 million tests till date as part of the country’s massive screening programmes to combat the spread of Covid-19.

The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention on Saturday reported 809 cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus, along with 722 recoveries.

One death was also reported.

More than 103,000 new Covid-19 tests were carried out across the country, the ministry added.

The UAE has conducted over 8.5 million tests till date as part of the country’s massive screening programmes to combat the spread of Covid-19.

However, the country has witnessed an alarming increase in daily cases, the rate of which indicates a surge in infections in the coming period. The ministry said most of the cases were caused by gatherings resulting from family and social visits without compliance to precautionary measures.

On Friday, the UAE authorities announced that any family event in the UAE, including a funeral procession, should not have more than 10 people in attendance. The ministry said family events should be restricted to first-degree relatives. The authority also recommended that all those attending the gathering should be tested for coronavirus at least 24 hours before the event. Social events will be closely monitored, the NCEMA said and warned tough action will be taken against violators.

Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi’s tourism authority issued precautionary guidelines for spas at five-star hotels and desert camps.  All staff at these facilities must be tested for Covid-19 prior to reopening and once every two weeks afterwards, the authorities stated in two new sets of safety rules.

Local authorities had temporarily suspended relaxation, massage and oriental bath services since March as part of precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the virus. In the same month, desert camps and safaris were also closed.
