Private schools in Sharjah have been warned against forcing their teachers and staff to sign new contracts with lower salaries. The Covid-19 situation should not be used as an excuse to reduce employees’ benefits, the authorities have reiterated.
The Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA) issued the warning to the emirate’s 115 private schools, after it received a number of complaints from teachers and administrators, who claimed that they were being given a new contract with less benefits.
An official from the SPEA said that in case such a dispute arises, the school’s staff mist submit a case at Tawafuq centres, which are licensed by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation.
He said the procedures on the matter are clear: If the contract of an employee at an educational institution is terminated, the management will have to pay the staff for compensation.
Any violation of labour laws will not be tolerated, he warned. Administrative penalties and fines have been set for non-compliance.
The official urged private schools to abide by rules, regulations and circulars and uphold the rights of their employees.
