The National Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Management Authority (NCEMA) had in August denied the story.

The Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeal has ordered the imprisonment of those accused in the case of the fabricated story of the death of five people from one family because of Covid-19 coronavirus infection, news agency WAM announced on Thursday.

The National Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Management Authority (NCEMA) had in August denied the story.

Taking to Twitter, the NCEMA had denied the “validity of reports circulated on television and social media”.

“The incident that was broadcast on Abu Dhabi Sports Channel is false and fabricated. The family does not exist and the story is completely fictitious and made up,” Saif Al Dhaheri, the official spokesperson of the NCEMA, said in August.

Counsellor Salem Al Zaabi, acting head of the Emergency Crisis and Disaster Prosecution, earlier said: “The Public Prosecution will not tolerate anyone who carries out his or her duties in the media in an irresponsible manner and it will apply the law firmly and decisively.”

Abu Dhabi Media had apologised to its audience for reporting the story live. It said the details were given by one of the family members. It confirmed that a “comprehensive investigation” has been launched to take appropriate measures, and “hold the source of the story accountable through official legal channels”.
