The coffin punishment will be enforced for at least a few more days to increase awareness about safety measures.
Jakarta authorities have come up with a “deadly” punishment for not wearing face masks and are laying violators inside the coffin so that they can “contemplate their actions”.
Local media in the Indonesian capital reported that violators must count up to 100 while on display for passers-by to take pictures, BBC wrote on Instagram. “With Covid-19 there is a risk of them being laid inside a real coffin,” head of the East Jakarta Public Order Agency, Budhy Novian said.
In Pasar Rebo, in East Jakarta, those caught without face masks need to either lay inside the coffin or pay a fine and do community service work. Several violators had to lay inside the open casket on Thursday for the duration of a minute, Todayonline.com quoted Indonesia’s Liputan 6 reports.
The coffin punishment will be enforced for at least a few more days to increase awareness about safety measures. “However, the open casket idea is still a new concept as we are still experimenting whether this approach can help change the public perception towards wearing their face masks,” Novian said.
